MLB The Show 26 Performance Guide: Eliminate Lag

#1
MLB The Show 26 is a fantastic baseball simulator, but like any modern sports game, it can hit a wall when it comes to performance. Lag, choppy frame rates, and stuttering swings can ruin the flow of a game, especially in Diamond Dynasty or online modes. Fortunately, most of these issues can be fixed with some in-game adjustments and hardware tweaks. Here’s a straightforward guide to getting smooth gameplay.

In-Game Display & Hitting Fixes (Crucial)

Some of the most severe performance problems come from the game’s new visual and hitting systems. Turning off a few features can make a massive difference:

Disable Offensive Displays – These overlays are handy but very demanding on your console. Head to Main Menu → Settings → Gameplay → Display and turn off all three offensive display options. Doing this removes the rendering spikes that happen right when the batter swings.

Turn Off Ambush Hitting – The new Ambush Hitting system can introduce input delay at the plate. Navigate to your gameplay controls and switch it off completely. Players in the community have consistently found this improves swing responsiveness.

Manage Hitting Blur & Depth of Field – If you’re on PlayStation, the new Hitting Depth of Field feature can cause severe frame drops during the pitcher’s windup. Go into the camera settings and keep this option off to maintain consistent performance.

Switch to Fast Play Presentation – Changing the game presentation from Broadcast to Fast Play eliminates heavy camera transitions and background cutscenes. This stabilizes your frame pacing and keeps the action fluid.

Console Hardware Settings

Even with in-game tweaks, your console settings play a huge role in performance:

Force Performance Mode – On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, go into your system settings and force Performance Mode over Resolution Mode. This prioritizes frame rate over visual fidelity, which is exactly what you want to eliminate lag spikes.

Toggle 120Hz Output – If your TV supports 120Hz, make sure it’s correctly enabled. However, if you notice choppy or uneven frames after updates, locking the video output to 60Hz often smooths gameplay immediately.

Xbox Input Workaround – Xbox players may notice stuttering with Pinpoint Pitching or Zone Hitting mechanics due to the wireless controller’s polling rate. Using a wired controller, like an affordable PowerA option, completely removes this input lag.

Online Connection & Stadium Tweaks

Online performance isn’t just about your console. Stadium choice and connection type also matter:

Avoid Over-Detailed Custom Stadiums – Large, custom-built stadiums can stress your system with extra geometry and shadows. For the smoothest frame rates, play home games in smaller venues like Minor League stadiums and set the time to evening or October settings to reduce lighting strain.

Switch to an Ethernet Cable – MLB The Show relies on precise timing for hitting windows online. Wi-Fi can cause packet loss spikes, which translate to delayed swings. Using a wired LAN connection ensures consistent online performance.
